Friday Fun! 8-Game Slate Kickoff Weekend

Happy Friday Bucketheads! We have an 8-game slate tonight with a $3,000 award for the first place finisher. Yeah CBB tourneys aren’t where we would like to see them, but who wouldn’t want an extra $3k in their pocket this weekend? We have got all the plays outlined for you below.

For those of you who are new to our brand I want to level set a bit. As you found out last night we don’t always go 3-0 in PrizePicks, but last year we hit at a 60% clip and will continue to provide you 3 names and hope for continued success.

We are also hit or miss on Fridays. Traditionally in non-con action Friday’s aren’t that bad as scheduling will give us gems like Gonzaga and Sparty tonight. Once conference play begins Friday’s dry up quite a bit. We’ve been known to take a Friday off and will continue to do that this year,\ if the juice doesn’t merit the squeeze on those smaller slates.

We also rarely do written content over the weekend. We’re dads, husbands, and sons, so life outside of here must have balance. We typically will release Saturday Prize Picks plays via twitter @CBB_DFS, and love to do our podcast when time permits (typically releasing on Saturday). Humble brag – the CBBDFS podcast is outstanding and can be found on all major podcast providers. Byrd and I have been exercising our vocal chops and practicing our 2000s WWE references in preparation for when the first pod of the season drops. Stay tuned! Until then, here is everything we like headed into tonight!

GUARDS WE LIKE

Kairo Oquendo, UGA (G, 9100) – Kario was the Bulldogs bucket-getter last year averaging 15 ppg while adding some rebounding chops from the wing. In Georgia’s season opener he posted 18 points to go with solid ancillary production. Oquendo figures to be the guy for UGA as Mike White figures out the rest of his rotation. The price is steep but against a new look Wake Forest team that didn’t play a ton of defense last year he could be a solid cash option tonight.

Damien Dunn, TEMP (G, 8500) – Dunn played 43/45 minutes in the opener and converted 18 or 18 free throw attempts en route to a 29-4-3 line against Wagner. As we layout all the value plays below we need to write up a few higher priced options. Nova is typically a slower team, but with Dunn’s 28% usage and impressive start, he can be taken into consideration.

Brandon Suggs, UCF (G/F, 5900) – Suggs logged a 98% minute share in a double-OT loss to UNC-Asheville in the home opener. While his usage and shot share weren’t great, he did get up 13 shots and got 4 steals and block on the defensive side. If Darius Johnson (G, 6600) is out again and if you can’t choke down the Kelly (G, 8200) and Hendricks (F, 9600) price tags, Suggs isn’t a bad option.

Kalif Battle, TEMP (G, 5800) – In 7 games last season Battle scored 19 or more points in 6 of them. In the season opener he had 16 points and a 35% shot share. While Damien Dunn will have the ball in his hands more, Battle is more than willing to get his when the rock is in his hands.

Nelly Cummings, PITT (G, 5600) – First off, Hugley is questionable tonight and even if he does play, I can’t see him playing more than 15 minutes. We aren’t paying $9700 for Hinson after his monster game 1 either. I do think there is one option that could get hot in herre though. Nelly, the former Colgate PG, played almost 30 minutes in the opener and even though his jumper wasn’t “going down down baby, yo street in a Range Rover,” he still took 11 FGAs and had 7 dimes. Against the attacking WVU D, Nelly should have his Air Force Ones strapped on tight as the primary ball handler against an aggressive WVU D, meaning plenty of opportunity to approach 5x at this price point. Similar to Wague for WVU, I’m still in a bit of wait and see mode on Federiko Federiko (F, 5400) after a strong game 1 performance.

AJ Hoggard, MSU (G, 5600) – Initially I thought Coach Izzo might move Walker to the 2 full time and let Hoggard run the show, but that wasn’t the case in their first game. Hoggard only logged 17 minutes while Walker played significant time at the point. Izzo is known for lineup tinkering, so could vary based on matchups and who is in the doghouse. That said, Hoggard had a monstrous 40% usage while he was in and dished 8 dimes. I have a hunch Izzo will lean on the bigger Hoggard against 6’3 Bolton and 6’4 Smith in the backcourt for the Zags, and he’s priced to play.

Cameron Hildreth, WAKE (G, 5200) – With Alondis and LaRavia moving on new faces will need to step up as Wake tries to recreate some of the 21-22 magic again this year. Returnee Daivien Williamson (G, 5800) and Florida transfer Tyree Appleby (G, 5600) are two players being counted on to do that. As is Hildreth, who I like tonight as a GPP flier. The 6-4 Sophomore had 31% usage in the opener and a 28% shot share. UGA is still a work in progress on both sides of the ball, so nice upside play here.

Jalen Warley, FSU (G, 4900) – The rising sophomore and projected first round NBA draft pick flashed at times last year and is expected to be a focal point of the Seminole offense this season. He logged 27 minutes in the opening loss to Stetson with 8 points, 5 boards, and 5 assists on 151 Ortg. Would like to see his usage and shot share come up, but if Florida St continues to struggle, Coach Hamilton may ask more from his young star. If you want a higher floor at a similar price point, you can look at Cam Fletcher (G, 5500). The former Kentucky Wildcat had several double digit scoring games last season and can pile up steals.

Devin Askew, CAL (G, 4700) – If you are wondering what hell is like, it’s probably watching K-State vs. Cal basketball on repeat. Askew, the former Wildcat/Longhorn turned Golden Bear led the team in minutes and points in their opener. He should be a popular option tonight in all formats. Lars Thiemann (F, 5900) will be Cal’s best post player this season and is priced appropriately, while Kuany Kuany (F, 3800) will have some random splash performances. He’s also the second player I’ve written up today that has the same first and last name.

Chris Arcidiacono, VU (G, 4300) – Nova’s top 3 are all priced over 8k, so hard to make a recommendation there. Daniels, Dixon, and Slater each played 30+ minutes and were fine, just way overpriced still. Arc played 29 minutes, 4th most on the team in the opener. While the stat line was uninspiring, at 4300 he seems like a recommendable Wildcat. Mark Armstrong (G, 4800) is more of a GPP option tonight. The freshman saw 17 minutes in the opener and showed well.

FORWARDS WE LIKE

Drew Timme, GONZ (F, 10100) – Sky high price tag, but this is a good set-up for him. Being an outside game, I expect Coach Few will want to get Timme established going to the rim where he can get layups or get fouled. While Sparty’s Mady Sissoko is an impressive athlete, his lack of game experience could be a major issue trying to defend the wily vet. Timme took 19 shots in the first game, so clear that the Zags are going to run everything through their All-American.

Ian Schieffelin, CLEM (F, 6000) – So basically what you need to know here is C PJ Hall (F, 8600) is Clemson’s best player, but he took an arrow to the knee and isn’t expected back for another few weeks. In the meantime, sophomore Schieffelin (pronounced /shhhffffln/ probably) is doing his best to fill the gap. While he didn’t play much last season, he did log 31 minutes against The Citadel earlier this week, scoring 20 and grabbing 14 boards on 26% usage and shot share. South Carolina will obviously be a step-up in competition, but he’s not a bad option at that price tier.

Steven Crowl, WISC (F, 5800) – We like Tyler Wahl this year. He’s good. Is he $9500 good? Stretch!!  Stanford does appear to be defensive agnostic this year, so I think the Badgers will put up some points tonight. The secondary option on offense should be Crowl and the good news is his price doesn’t make me want to throw up in my mouth. I think they’ll give Jordan Davis (G, 4600) every chance to emerge as another scoring option, but I know the experts have some doubts on his overall skillset. As for Stanford, I really don’t have any recommendations based on their pricing. Maybe 7’1 Max Raynaud (F, 5700) will put together another epic performance off the bench? He would be a risky GPP option only, but his size will certainly be needed against the Wisconsin front line. We’ll play Harrison and Jones when their prices come down into the high 6k/low 7k range.

Keyontae Johnson, KSU (F, 5200) – The best news of the season was seeing Key Johnson return to the hardwood on Monday. Great to see Key recovered from his heart condition and we wish him the best moving forward. He’s also priced to play tonight in what should be a close game. He was Florida’s best player when healthy and forms a great 1-2 punch with Nowell at KSU. Go get em Key!! Desi Sills (G, 4500) is another potential GPP option as a microwave off the bench for KSU, but with a lackluster game environment there are probably better games to attack. The new coaching staff must hate Ismael Massoud (F, 3800), because he barely played in the opener. Too bad because he had some decent DFS games in the past.

Malik Hall, MSU (F, 5100) – While I think Hauser (F, 7100) will have a nice year, and could have a solid game, I’m going to lean towards Hall at a much cheaper price point. The aircraft carrier games can present harsh conditions which has led to poor shooting in the past. Hall can get it done on the boards, has defensive upside (3 blocks last game), and most of his scoring happens in the paint. He doesn’t always show up, but I’ll take a chance at this price. Also really like the freshman Jaxon Kohler (F, 4800). He’s a terrific rebounder/post player and could see a lot of tick, especially if Sissoko gets into foul trouble trying to contain Timme.

Tre Mitchell, WVU (F, 4600) – The former Longhorn was questionable in game 1, but ended up playing 14 minutes off the bench. He scored 13 points in his short time on the court and he’s expected to be one of WVUs best players this season. The talent is there, just needs enough PT to flash his upside. Huggy Bear played 11 players 14+ minutes in game 1, so we certainly lose some upside with this balanced attack. With Matthews and Stevenson overpriced, Johnson/Toussaint splitting minutes, and a very small sample size for Wague, it’s tough to trust any of the other Mountaineer options.

Andrew Carr, WAKE (F, 4600) – The former Deleware Blue Hen played 34 minutes and had a 23% shot share in his Demon Deacon debut Monday night. At 4600 and against a team that was atrocious defensively a year ago, Carr makes for an interesting GPP option this evening. Mike White will eventually get the Bulldogs better on the defensive side of the ball, but it is going to take some time.

Caleb Daniels

OVER 20.5 Pts+Rebs+Asts

While I don’t like his fantasy price, his o20.5 PRA prop looks pretty good to me. In the opener he had 24 points, 10 rebounds, and 4 assists. Like it or not, until Cam Whitmore shows up the Wildcats are running through Daniels.

– Joe

Emoni Bates

OVER 15.5 Pts+Rebs+Asts

The former 5-star recruit has had his share of drama, but he should take a million shots tonight against Michigan. He was suspended for EMU’s opener, but had 17 shot attempts in their exhibition game en route to 27 real points. He’ll be wildly inefficient, but should put up enough to hit OVER 15.5 PRA

– Byrd

BUCKETHEAD BONUS

Coleman Hawkins

OVER 7 Rebounds

With Kofi gone to the NB…err…Japan, Illinois has a monstrous gap to fill in the paint. Hawkins is more of a stretch 5, but he should be active on the boards, particularly against a UMKC team that plays a lot of zone. The Roos have given up double-digit rebound games to opposing big men in both their first two games and Coleman is coming off a 12 rebound performance against Eastern Illinois.
